And
Used to join two words, phrases, parts of sentences, or related statements together.
  • Examples:
    • The children like the food and desert.
    • Freddy and Mike are brothers.
    • She has a soft and clear voice.
    • They can play soccer and baseball.
But
Used to introduce an added statement, usually something that is different from what you have said before
  • Examples:
    • She's not a painter but a writer
    • You can invite Keith to the party, but please don't ask that friend of his.
    • I don’t like this medicine but I take it anyway.
    • I like this place but it’s too expensive.
